How to kickstart your skincare routine

We asked our skincare expert, Felicia Walker, how to boost our routines and give our skin some extra attention.

Is your skincare routine in a bit of a slump? Try these reboot techniques.

Add an exfoliator. Dead skin build-up can render your fancy serums and face creams ineffective and lead to fine lines, wrinkles, and less-than-luminous skin. Whether using a physical exfoliant (i.e., grains, sugar, rice, bamboo, etc.) or a chemical exfoliant (i.e., glycol acid, mandolin acid, lactic acid, etc.), routinely exfoliating the skin is crucial. This process helps boost collagen, clear congested pores, boost radiance and improve subsequent skincare products’ absorption.

Make it a mask. Nothing offers instant gratification quite like a good face mask. Whatever the goal — calm, brighten, detox, repair, nourish — there’s a mask for that! A weekly treatment mask can work miracles to revive neglected skin.

Swap your face cream. Sometimes jump-starting your skincare routine is as simple as an edit to your moisturizer. Maybe you need more hydration? More attention to texture? Something that addresses breakouts? If your face cream isn’t addressing your top skincare concern, swap it with something that better aligns with your needs.

Amplify your serum. Serums are wonderfully effective at targeting specific areas of concern. So if your routine feels like it’s underperforming, revisit your serum and upgrade as needed. Remember, the serum’s molecular structure is much smaller than that of a cream, so serums penetrate deeply, making them super powerful and an excellent choice for amplifying your skincare results.
