Five Essential Skincare Tips for Winter

We here at Haven Well Within still have many winter days ahead of us, so we asked beauty expert Val Monroe how to comfort our skin in cold temps.

Similar to how you throw on extra layers of clothing when the weather turns cold, you want to add layers of protection to your skin to keep it healthy and glowing. Remember: beautiful skin is healthy skin.

The good news is that it’s neither difficult nor expensive to pamper your skin when it needs more TLC than usual. Just follow these five easy steps:

1. Prevent moisture loss. That means no long, hot showers or baths. Instead, try a short warm spritz with a gentle, soap-free cleanser. If the air in your home is dry, use a humidifier to add moisture to the environment.

2. Moisturize after cleansing while your skin is still damp. Products will absorb more effectively this way. Also, look for a lotion or cream containing hyaluronic acid and/or glycerin and ceramides to help hold that water in.

3. Treat extra-dry skin with a facial oil. The smooth texture feels luxurious and once the skin is moisturized, the oil helps lock in the hydration.

4. Use products in the most effective order. That means from lightest to heaviest. So: serum (if you use one), lotion or cream, then oil.

5. Don’t skip the sunscreen. The sun is actually closer to the earth in winter than summer, so its burning rays can still damage your skin.
