5 Reasons to go Plant-Based

You know that a vegetarian diet is good for you, but our nutrition expert Chelsea Williams breaks down some benefits you might not realize.

You May Reduce Bad Cholesterol

Although several factors contribute to unhealthy cholesterol levels — including overconsumption of trans fat and saturated fat, excess weight gain, and physical inactivity — cholesterol only comes from animal products. Therefore, limiting the consumption of animal-based products and adding more fresh fruit, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and seeds into your diet can help maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

You Might Lower Your Risk of Heart Disease

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, studies show that lowering levels of bad cholesterol can prevent heart attacks and heart disease — and in some cases, reverse it. (For those who already have heart disease or have had a heart attack, a plant-based lifestyle reduces the risk of future attacks.) By consuming plant-based meals, you’ll avoid the main causes of saturated fats, which create the plaque buildup in the arteries associated with heart disease.

The Health of Your Skin, Hair, and Nails May Improve

Many fruits, vegetables, and other plant-based foods are high in antioxidants like vitamin C, which may boost collagen production and protect the skin by counteracting free radical production. Because plant-based diets are traditionally high in essential vitamins and minerals, this swap may help you grow longer, healthier hair. Additionally, plant-based foods are also high in fiber to keep things regular, and a healthy elimination of bodily waste has been thought to contribute to better-looking skin.

You May Reduce Your Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

According to a 2018 study by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, a vegetarian diet characterized by whole plant foods is the most beneficial diet for type 2 diabetes prevention and management. Also, the 2015–2020 US Dietary Guidelines for Americans state that red meat may promote insulin sensitivity and resistance due to the high levels of amino acids, which can interfere with the blood’s normal metabolism of sugar.

A Plant-Based Diet May Help You Maintain a Healthier Weight

Research shows that plant-based diets may lower body mass index. Because most plant-based foods are low in calories and high in nutrients, this diet is linked to lower rates of obesity. Plant-based foods are high in fiber, which can help keep you feeling fuller longer. Plus, as you begin to eat less processed food, you may start to crave less processed food, in turn fueling your body with the nutrients it needs to thrive.
