Five tips for healthier and happier looking winter skin

We asked Felicia Walker, our favorite beauty expert, how to take care of our skin when it’s cold outside.

Here are my best tips & practices for protecting precious, vulnerable skin.

Every winter, I dust off my trusty TCD Playbook, Operation: Take Care of Dryness. And this year is no exception. Severe winter weather combined with obsessive hand washing and relentless over-sanitizing all zap skin of much-needed moisture. We need a hydration hero, and we need it now!

While it’s tempting to slather on a dense, rich creme and cut to the chase — it’s important to remember to hydrate your skin in layers. After a gentle cleanse, press on an essence, hydrating serum, cushiony cream, and then seal everything in with a nourishing face oil. The oil acts as a sealant and helps preserve the moisture longer.

Use a humidifier to welcome moisture back into the air. I find this helpful in main spaces like the bedroom, living room, or dining room table if that’s where your current work from home is happening. If you’re homeschooling your little ones, consider a humidifier in their workspace as well.

In the mornings, try swapping your regular facial wash with a micellar water. This no-rinse liquid typically contains hydrating compounds that help skin retain moisture better than a face wash. By starting your skincare routine with a micellar water, you’re removing dirt and oil but also giving your skin a surge of moisture.

As much as I love a hot steamy shower, very hot water robs the skin of natural moisture. And when skin lacks natural moisture, it’s tough to stay hydrated and healthy. The solution is simple: cut your shower time a bit and use lukewarm water. If you still need more comfort and warmth, slink into a cozy cashmere lounge set. Your skin will thank you.

Sunscreen is always in style, even in winter. Keep in mind — the sun can be particularly harmful in winter as snow is highly reflective. Stay protected when going outdoors or when working from home this winter. Sun damage makes skin dry and unhealthy, so please don’t ditch the SPF. Your skin is counting on you!
