Essential Oils and Dry Winter Skin

Our resident expert, Valencia McClure, weighs in on which oils to stock this season.

Wintertime can bring a lot of happiness, but it can also bring dry, flaky, and chapped skin. Essential oils are great for nourishing dry winter skin, and have the added benefit of helping to prevent cell damage and reducing signs of aging. Here are some of my favorites:

1. Frankincense. My all-time favorite, Frankincense is a natural astringent which helps to repair and regenerate skin cells. It’s the perfect oil to heal rough, chapped skin and is especially good for dry mature skin.

2. Chamomile. Known for being a relaxing oil before bedtime, chamomile has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can help reduce redness along with boosting skin health.

3. Geranium. Geranium can be used as a toner to regulate oil production, and it’s known to calm skin irritation and inflammation while providing moisturizing properties.

4. Lavender. One of the most widely known essential oils, lavender is very calming and soothing to skin. It also promotes cell regeneration and leaves the skin feeling smooth and soft.

It’s important to note that anytime you use essential oils directly on the skin, you will always want to dilute the oil with a carrier oil such as jojoba, hemp seed, apricot kernel, or rosehip oil. Another option is to add essential oils directly to your current skincare products.
