3 ways stage your bedroom for your best sleep yet

We asked Dr. Nerina Ramlakhan, our rejuvenation and sleep expert, how to turn your bedroom into a sleep-worthy space. Here are her thoughts:

Pay attention to sights, sounds and smells. If you are a sensitive sleeper you might be waking up at the slightest sound, so your environment needs to be in tune with your nervous system. Calming lighting and colors, soothing smells and listening to music or sounds that settle you and enable you to feel peaceful. Since this will be different for each of us, make time to work out exactly what is right for you.

Create healthy boundaries with our electronic devices. The pull from our devices at present can be seductive, addictive and so detrimental to the deep healing we should be getting from our sleep. Ideally, all phones and laptops should be kept out of the bedroom. Use an old-fashioned clock as your alarm and avoid looking at it when you wake up during the night. Create an electronic sundown in which you withdraw from your devices two hours before you get into bed.

Listen to your body. Your body language will tell you whether your bedroom feels just right. When you step into your space, your shoulders should relax and you should feel your breath deepen and drop into your belly. Once your body gives you the cues you’re looking for, you’ll know you’ve created your sanctuary and haven.
