How to get your best skin at home

We asked skincare expert Felicia Walker about skincare for staying in, the importance of SPF protection, the blue light plight, and what to do about a lack of Vitamin D.

I’m a sunscreen-365-days-a-year kind of girl because I know that daylight (regardless of the season) equals sun exposure. And protecting skin against UVA and UVB damage is crucial for maintaining clear, healthy, radiant skin. So often we seek some elusive secret serum or luxe face lotion to improve skin’s clarity, tone, and texture — when the answer is simple: sunscreen.

And with so much time spent indoors, there might be a little confusion on whether or not we still need sunscreen. And the answer is: yes — particularly if you work near a window. And blue light (emitted from laptops and cell phones) is a new layer of protection that we now need given our increased screen-time. Two quick fixes are cute blue light blocking glasses and sunscreen formulated with blue light protection, both help shield you from the damaging, premature aging effects of blue light.

On a parting note: don’t go to the extreme and forget to get in a little Vitamin D. Even though we’re spending more time at home, try to plan a 10–30-minute midday Vitamin D stroll a few times a week. And if that’s not possible, there’s no shortage of supplement options. From drops, to powders to vegan capsules you’re sure to find an alternative route that’s right for you.
